DIY Wooden Planter Box

Wooden Shoe Rack // Argos
Plants // Ikea

I've been eyeing up some vintage wooden planters on Ebay and Etsy for quite some time now, but since saving money is a definite must, I decided to make my own (minus the vintage factor)
This gorgeous photo posted by Fancie on their Facebook wall inspired the look and feel of the project! (They've now added these cute planters to their Meadowhall shop)

As I didn't want to spend much money on the project, I decided to use this old shoe rack I had which was no longer in use. It originally cost £5 ish from the Argos value range a few years ago.
I took it all apart and decided to arrange the wood pieces to see what would work best. I then cut the pieces to an appropriate size and attached them together to form a box shape! As easy as that! All the pebbles have been collected from a local beach too!

So, this is my 'green fingered' attempt to fill my bedroom with lovely stuff (on a budget!)
Have you tried making anything like this?

  1. Wow that looks fantastic - like something you bought from a shop rather than made! I have been wanting to do somthing similar in the kitchen with herbs, but the vintage boxes cost at least £30 each. As I want to sell the house, I don't want to spend too much. I may have to 'borrow' this idea from you! :)

  3. That looks amazing, well done you for taking something you already had and repurposing it - I thought you were going to say you only spent, say, £10 on it but you already had the shoe rack, even better! It looks absolutely brilliant. I like the Fancie one with the stencil on the front too, maybe you should stencil something on yours like 'grow' - that might encourage them! :) xxx

    1. Thank you!! :) I like that too! I've seen some cute wooden letters on ebay I'd like to paint and glue on! But I'm not quite sure what to say on it!
I was thinking 'Fiona's Flowers' (although technically they're not flowers!) Maybe 'Grow' would be cuter and more appropriate!

It's so clever that you've already owned the shoe rack, and altered it! It's so lovely!

  7. very cool, I love how it turned out, plus you could always vintage-ify it, or decorate it, seeing as it is simple, I think I like it like that though, but if you got bored you could change it. Better than half the projects on "super Scrimpers" - maybe you could start your own show ;)
